Living in Millcreek, Utah
Millcreek is one of Salt Lake County's newest cities, between Salt Lake City to the north and Holladay and Murray to the south. Downtown Salt Lake is about 6 road miles away, and Mill Creek Canyon is right next door to the east.
What it's like to live in Millcreek
Millcreek had 63,380 people at the 2020 Census. It was an unincorporated township until it became a city on December 28, 2016, and many homes here still have a Salt Lake City mailing address.
Its new city center, Millcreek Common, opened in 2022, and the new Millcreek City Hall opened beside it in 2023. The Common's Skate Loop becomes the state's largest outdoor ice rink from mid-November through mid-March, and there's also a climbing wall, a splash pad, a public market, and events like a farmers market.
Millcreek is one of the three Salt Lake areas I focus on, along with the East Bench and Cottonwood Heights.
Getting outside in Millcreek
- Mill Creek Canyon is in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, just east of the city, with hiking, biking, and picnic areas. Its upper gate closes for the winter on November 1, and the canyon road is groomed for cross-country skiing. Fat bikes can use the groomed trail, too.
- Dogs are welcome in Mill Creek Canyon, unlike Big Cottonwood Canyon just over the ridge. They can be off-leash on trails on odd-numbered days only, and must be leashed on even-numbered days and in picnic areas and parking lots.
- Canyon passes: buy daily or annual passes at the canyon's tollbooth, which doesn't take cash.
- Ski resorts: Snowbird, Alta, Solitude, and Brighton are about 19 to 23 road miles away, and Park City's Main Street is about 26 miles away via I-80.
Good to know before you buy in Millcreek
Short-term rentals
Millcreek only licenses short-term rentals in the owner's primary residence, and its rules are in Chapter 5.19 of the city code. A Millcreek home you won't live in can't be a licensed nightly rental, so we'll go over the current rules before you buy.
City or mailing address. A "Salt Lake City" mailing address doesn't always mean the home is in Salt Lake City. Millcreek has its own city government and rules, so we'll confirm which city any home is actually in.
Schools. Millcreek is in the Granite School District.
