Living in Park City, Utah

Historic Main Street, two big ski resorts, and trails that start right in town. Park City is what most people picture when they think about moving here, and it's where I live.

What it's like to live in Park City

Park City started as a silver mining town in the 1800s and turned to skiing as the mines declined. Today, Old Town and Main Street are the heart of it, with restaurants and shops along the historic street and Park City Mountain's Town Lift right off Main Street.

I live in Old Town, right on Main Street, so this part of town is my backyard.

Park City co-hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics, and Utah will host the Winter Games again in 2034, with events planned at Utah Olympic Park, Park City Mountain, and Deer Valley. Getting around without a car is easier than you might think: Park City Transit's buses have been free to ride for 50 years.

Getting outside in Park City

  • Skiing and riding at Park City Mountain and Deer Valley Resort. The Town Lift takes you from Main Street to the bottom of the Bonanza Express, and Deer Valley's Snow Park Lodge is about 2 road miles from Main Street.
  • Trails everywhere. The Mountain Trails Foundation puts Park City's trail system at about 400 miles of non-motorized trail, and the city has preserved almost 10,000 acres of open space.
  • Mountain biking. In 2012, Park City became the first place the International Mountain Bicycling Association named a Gold-Level Ride Center.
  • Round Valley: 694 acres of open space with more than 30 miles of high-desert trails.
  • Utah Olympic Park, built for the 2002 Games, about 7 road miles from Main Street.

Good to know before you buy in Park City

Short-term rentals

Park City requires a nightly rental license for stays under 30 days, and nightly rentals are only allowed in some zones. HOAs can add their own rules on top of that. Before you make an offer, I'll help you check the zoning and the HOA documents for the home.

Traffic. SR-224 and SR-248 are the main roads in and out of town. UDOT and its partners are planning bus rapid transit along SR-224, with service slated to start in 2028.

Sundance is moving on. The Sundance Film Festival, a January fixture here for decades, moves to Boulder, Colorado, starting in 2027. If you're counting on festival-week rental income, factor that in.
